About Wampworx

As Cape Cod became the fastest growing region in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, home values and costs skyrocketed while living wage jobs became more and more scarce. This reality was devastating for the Wampanoag, Native Americans indigenous to this area, as well as our neighbors, many who have generations of history here. People well invested in this region were being squeezed out by economic necessity while demand for skilled construction labor was increasing. WampWorx was born in this environment to provide jobs and fulfill a need for qualified contractors motivated to achieve a reputation that assures our place in the community.

A great leap of faith was necessary to jump into such a competitive business where well-established general contractors are the competition at every turn. Challenged to provide the best labor, the best craftsmen and the most qualified leadership at a competitive rate, the WampWorx leadership was not shy in pursuing jobs large and small on a proving ground not easily plotted.

From painting houses at the Aquinnah Wampanoag Housing Project on Martha’s Vineyard, to assisting with the construction of Cape Cod’s first Roche Brothers supermarket in Mashpee, WampWorx was on the job.

All the while, a major objective for WampWorx was the Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC) issued by the Department of Defense. The MATOC would authorize WampWorx to bid on construction jobs on the Massachusetts Military Reservation and other military sites in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It would also enable WampWorx to provide higher wages and other benefits to employees and grow the organization to provide more and better services to all customers.

In February of 2005 WampWorx became one of the 16 contractors to be selected for a five-year MATOC award. It was a brass ring in terms of the WampWorx founding mission, to provide living wage employment to local people.

For the government, finding responsible construction contractors who possess the capacity to perform the work and have the integrity and reliability, which assures good faith performance, is of the highest priority when considering the MATOC awards. The WampWorx proposal was selected based on “best value” criteria, which considers the most advantageous offers by the corporate management leadership, technical capability, past performance and price realism.

In addition to the MATOC, one month later WampWorx was issued a Tradesperson’s Repair and Maintenance Contract with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Operational and Services Division to perform services on any town, county or state project.

These contracts, as well as the relationships WampWorx has forged with local homeowners and business people on the Cape and Islands, have established WampWorx well on our goal to become the small business contractor of choice for local construction projects.

Community Involvement:

A strong tribal, community and environmental commitment provides balance to the professional endeavors of WampWorx CEO Mark Harding as evidenced in his dedication of countless volunteer hours in service on local commissions and councils.

He is the Native American representative to the Cape Cod Commission,  a regional planning and regulatory agency. The commission is responsible to prepare and implement a regional land use policy plan for all of Cape Cod, review and regulate Developments of Regional Impact, and recommend designation of certain areas as Districts of Critical Planning Concern.

Mark also serves as the Wampanoag representative to the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR) Senior Management Board (SMB). The board advises MMR organizations on environmental programs and policies.

In addition, Mark was appointed by the Governor of Massachusetts to represent the Wampanoag tribe on the Citizens Advisory Council to the Environmental Management Commission (EMC), where he serves as Vice-Chairman. Established by Massachusetts’s law, the council advises the commission on issues related to protection of the water supply and wildlife habitat on the Massachusetts Military Reservation. The EMC consists of three members - the commissioner of the Department of Fisheries & Wildlife; the commissioner of the Department Conservation & Recreation; and the commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection

On the island of Martha’s Vineyard, Mark serves as an overseer on the Vineyard Land Foundation,  a non-profit land use planning organization dedicated to preserving the natural beauty and rural character of Martha's Vineyard. It is responsible for the preservation of significant agricultural areas, wildlife habitats and scenic views on the island.
